I managed to press the broken connector down really hard onto the board in the spot where it was originally attached, and lone behold, it worked. So the 1000GB hard drive still works perfectly. After about 5 minutes of holding this piece on the board my thumb was aching!
At least the hard drives still good!
So now I have a few choices, I can either buy a soldering kit and solder the connector back on to the board, buy a new SATA hard drive enclosure, or just buy an IDE, SATA to USB converter kit. I think I'll go with the converter kit as it can be used many times and costs about the same as a soldering kit. Also, with the SATA to USB converter kit it can be used for all other hard drives of all types and sizes, like IDE drives, Laptop drives etc, so it seems like a really good buy. Then again, I might take the risk and buy another external hard drive, but not a Seagate! Toshiba 1 TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive seems to be a good choice. The reviews make me think this external drive might last longer then a few months. Price isn't too bad as well.

hey
your information was very helpful and i have the same issue the plug in chip of external hard drive is broken and when i plug into computer it is not reading it.. so i open the hard drive and tried pressing it and plugged in but its not reading it at all.. it has all my back up can you please help me
where do i find specific SATA to PATA/IDE Hard Drive Interface Adapter?
or internal thing i dont know what is it called but that little green motherboard.. is there any chance of buying it from anywhere
thank
Chirag
Hi Chirag, you could either buy a cheap soldering iron and try to re-solder the piece back on, or you could buy a SATA to USB converter kit.
Take a look at these two products:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Importer520-Drive-CD-Rom-Converter-Adapter/dp/B0037EX6RA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1419468195&sr=8-3&keywords=SATA+to+PATA%2FIDE+Hard+Drive+Interface+Adapter
http://www.amazon.co.uk/HDE-SATA-Drive-Interface-Adapter/dp/B008X8NK0I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419468613&sr=8-1&keywords=SATA+to+PATA%2FIDE+Hard+Drive+Interface+Adapter
It really depends what type of hard drive you have to be sure which one you will need to buy.
Thanks
Hey PT
Thank you for replying!!
I had a look both links but i dont think its the same internal part as my hard drive.. I really appreciate your help
take a look at this hard link.. this is the hard drive i have
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/9752949/-/Product.html
how hard is the soldering as i dont want to mess it up.. i rather use the cables.. if you can have a look above link and let me know the right cable to retrieve the data?
Thank you once again
Chirag
Hi Chirag, I had a look at the link and the only connections I can see are a normal AC connection and a mini USB to normal USB. Without seeing the internal connections it would be a guess at what kit you need to buy. If you only have one piece missing and all the connectors are still intact you could solder it back on. The first link to the kit I gave you will be suitable for a lot of external hard drives. SATA to IDE will work with that kit.
If you can press the piece back on exactly so all the connectors are touching and hold it there!, there is a chance you could read the disc.
Thanks
Hey PT
Thanks once again but just wanted to be sure yh i wouldnt mind buying it but
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-2-0-to-SATA-Serial-ATA-22P-Adapter-Cable-For-2-5-HDD-SSD-Hard-Drive-Laptop-/131389287787?pt=UK_Computing_Drive_Cables_Adapters&hash=item1e97696d6b
i found this from ebay. will this do a job? as my adapter and all working find i just need a usb plug in to be fixed so above link i found it on ebay. would this be a solution also?
Thanks
Hi, the product you linked to will not work. That was for a 2.5 drive (Laptop drive). You need a 3.5 (Normal sized hard drive)
Cheers
Thanks man
I will order the first link you sent me from amazon and i will check it out and will let you know..
Thanks for being really helpful i really appreciate your help:)
Cheers
Hi, it should work if you have a normal SATA or IDE hard drive, which it looks to me like you have.
If it doesn't work you can just return the item. It should work though. Always happy to help. Hope you get it powered up! Thanks.
Hey PT
Hope your good and hope you had a lovely new year!! I ordered the item and it arrived just day before new year and i used it few days ago
..
I plugged it in and turn on the switch it on and smoke started to come out from hard drive.. it probably burn my hard drive and i can smell the burning in hard drive and not sure if my data is still in there:(
I contact amazon and complaint about it and they were totally useless as they just refunded my money and i m sure they could have been more helpful.. i was very pissed off about it the way amazon handle the situation..
anyways is there any way i could try and get my data back from any other cable or anything??
Thanks
Hi Chirag, happy new year. I'm shocked to hear that your drive started smoking!..Unless your hard drive runs at a strange voltage, which it most probably doesn't, I can't think of why it would start smoking other then the drive itself could be well and truly broken.
If the SATA / IDE connections from the kit you bought fitted into your hard drive with no problem then they should have worked fine. Unless you bought a faulty product.
My solution would be to do like I did and press the broken piece back on with your thumb, you have to be very precise. Or buy a soldering kit and solder the bit back on. I was able to recover my files while I pressed the piece down onto where it was attached.
Do you have a desktop computer? If so, and the external drive has the correct connection try to hook the drive up to the computer set as a slave and get the data off that way. You might need to use an external power source (AC adapter) Always worth a try. Cheers.
Hey
Yh it fitted perfectly but i think it was a faulty product!!
pressing it with the thumb but for how long it has so much data that it would take me forever to and i cant keep pressing with my thumb for half a day constant? lol
I have never done soldering before.. is it straight forward soldering? and guaranteed recovery?
No, I do not have desktop i only have laptop
Cheers
Hi Chirag, with the thumb pressing thing you will have to do it a bit at a time!. Grab some data then give it a rest for a while.
Soldering isn't really that hard. Just try not to burn yourself! Guaranteed recovery? Absolutely not. If the appropriate adapter kit didn't work, And with you having a smoking drive I wouldn't hold your breath.
Give the thumb pressing a go, that's the best bet to quickly find out if the drive is readable. if you do the thumb pressing and the laptop picks up the drive and reads it, then with a bit of luck you might be able to get your files off. Nothing is guaranteed though, specially with a smoker!.
Good luck.
